Cathy Newson Photography “Scenes from Maine & Away”
Summer 2008 Art Show at Mae’s Café
Mae’s Café announces its Summer 2008 Art Show – “Scenes from Maine & Away” – featuring the photography of Cathy Newson. The show will run from June 1st to September 7th, with an opening reception on Thursday June 5th from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. This collection includes a wide variety of vistas & vignettes that showcase Cathy’s love of vivid colors and dramatic lighting, with a large selection of images of Coastal Maine.
In both 2007 and 2008, Cathy’s photographs were selected for the cover of the Southern MidCoast Chamber’s “Allure of the Coast” visitors guide, over 80,000 copies of which are distributed throughout the region. Cathy has exhibited her photography at juried art festivals around the Northeast, including Bath Heritage Days “Art in the Park”, the Brunswick Sidewalk Art Festival, the Yarmouth Clam Festival, and the WCSH-6 Portland Sidewalk Art Festival. She is a member of the Five Rivers Arts Alliance, Chocolate Church, Boothbay Region Art Foundation, and the Kennebec Art Club -- where as Vice President she has organized many of their recent exhibits. Cathy also has an online gallery at www.cathynewson.com.
Cathy Newson’s love of photography began with her first Kodak instamatic camera in photography’s hometown of Rochester, NY. She grew up surrounded by friends and family who loved photography, and often learned more from them than through formal instruction.
After spending many happy summers and holidays along the New England coast, Cathy and her husband Graham bought a place of their own in MidCoast Maine. Now year-round residents of Bath, Cathy finds constant inspiration in the changing seasons, picturesque towns and harbors, and bold coastline of Maine. Cathy has recently joined CHR Realty/GMAC Real Estate in Bath as a licensed REALTOR®, and looks forward to helping others find their dream home in the MidCoast Region.

Mae's Blueberry Pie Eating Contest
2nd Annual Mae's Blueberry Pie Eating Contest
Contest winners
(2006)
After the popularity of last year’s pie eating contest, Mae’s Café owners Andy and Katie Winglass knew they needed to expand from a one to four day event for Bath’s Heritage Days.
Over 50 contestants from Maine, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont attempted to be the first eat their way to the bottom of a 6” blueberry pie, with hands behind their backs. The motivation? A full sized 9” Mae’s Café pie of their choice.
Most participants entered of their own free will, however, a few found themselves unknowingly signed up by friends.
Hughie Solari of Boston was using the restroom after eating lunch when pal Mike Sullivan, Boston signed him up. Little did Mike know that Hughie would end up taking the contest hands down. Sullivan’s response? “I’m berry disappointed.”
Officer Phil Jensen was signed up by fellow Bath PD officer Mike Lathrop, who ended up entering the contest himself. It was a close race until Lathrop received word via radio that he needed to leave, only to find out seconds later it was a false alarm! He dove back in valiantly and nearly won, but Jensen prevailed.
Others winners include Will Duggan, MA; Al Heath, Arrowsic; Lincoln Weiss, Bath; Seth Benshoff, PA; Harry Bouchard, Bath.
